The Purpose in the Pieces - It Had to Happen
The Purpose in the Pieces: Why Everything That Happened to You Had to Happen
Life rarely makes sense while you're living it. Some moments feel random, some are painful, and some are just downright confusing. But Romans 8:28 offers a powerful truth that changes how we see everything we've been through.
"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose." - Romans 8:28
God never wastes a single piece of your story. Every event, every season, every tear, every setback had a purpose. It had to happen.
Why Does God Allow Painful Things to Happen?
God Uses the Pieces You Don't Want
Think about a board game. Before the game can even begin, every piece has to be placed in position. That's exactly how God has already designed your life. Every piece of your story, including the painful ones, the embarrassing ones, and the disappointing ones, had to be placed where it was for the bigger picture to come together.
There are things that happened in your life you wish you could go back and change. Decisions you made, relationships you entered, situations you found yourself in. But even those pieces are part of what God is using to develop you.
"Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivered Him out of them all." - Psalm 34:19
Notice the word "but." Everything before it gets overturned by what comes after. Yes, there will be afflictions. Yes, there will be pain. But the Lord delivers us out of all of it. That's why every time you find yourself in an affliction, it's actually a reason to praise, because deliverance is on the way.
God is not waiting for you to be perfect before He works through you. He is working through the very parts of your life you've tried to hide, the insecurities, the failures, the fears. He uses those things to grow your faith and give you compassion for others going through the same things.
That pain you went through? It produced something in you that comfort never could have.
What Does It Mean When Life Doesn't Make Sense?
God Uses the Pieces You Don't Understand
Confusion is often the classroom of God. He is not the author of confusion, but He uses it as a classroom. A classroom is designed for learning, and when we walk through confusing seasons, we are walking through God's classroom.
"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding." - Proverbs 3:5-6
It is not meant for us to understand everything. What we are designed for is to trust God. In all our ways, we are called to acknowledge Him, not figure everything out, but acknowledge Him in the middle of it.
We live in an age where people want instant answers. But some answers only come through time and trust. You cannot trace God, but you can trust Him. He said He would never leave you, so you never have to wonder if He is present in your situation. He already knew it was going to happen before you did, and He is already working it out.
Faith does not grow in clarity. It grows in mystery. When we lean on our own understanding, we almost always make it worse, because we don't understand why it's happening in the first place. God does. He knows the beginning from the end, and He knows exactly what needs to be worked out in us.
How Does God Work When Life Shifts Suddenly?
God Uses the Pieces You Didn't Expect
Life can shift in an instant. One phone call, one diagnosis, one unexpected piece of news can change the entire trajectory of your life. But here is what you need to hold onto: God is already in the shift.
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord." - Isaiah 55:8
Just because something shook your world does not mean it shook His. He is not caught off guard. He is not scrambling. He is present in every unexpected turn, working behind the scenes like a manufacturer building something you cannot yet see.
Think about putting something in the oven. You don't see it cooking, but something is happening. The timer is going to go off. God is working in your situation the same way. You may not see what He is doing, but He is doing it. Your time is coming. Hold on and trust Him.
God Uses the Pieces You Can't Control
We like to think we are in control. We build our routines and our patterns and our plans. But the truth is, we cannot do anything without Him. God uses the pieces we cannot control, and His sovereignty is not threatened by our uncertainty.
"He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." - Philippians 1:6
God does not start something and walk away from it. He is not going to quit on you. He is going to work it and perform it in you. People try to control outcomes, timelines, and relationships, but God is not bound by our deadlines.
Surrendering to God is not weakness. It is strength. It is the doorway to God's best. When we surrender, we open up the space for Him to do what only He can do. He needed you to let go so He could take over.
Romans 8:28 does not say everything is good. It says everything works together for good. God is the master weaver. He takes the thread of joy, the thread of pain, the thread of confusion, and the thread of disappointment, and He weaves them into a masterpiece. You may not see the full picture yet, but God is not finished.
How Jesus Shows Us That Everything Had to Happen
Every piece of Jesus' life on earth had to happen exactly as it did. The virgin birth, the flight into Egypt, His baptism, the temptation in the wilderness, the calling of disciples, the growing opposition, the triumphal entry, the Last Supper, the crucifixion, and the resurrection. Each piece fulfilled a purpose. Each piece was necessary.
When He went to the cross, it looked like the worst possible outcome. But it had to happen. Because of it, the veil was torn, and all of us can now come boldly to the throne of grace. What looked like the end was actually the doorway to salvation for all of humanity.
The same principle is at work in your life. What looks like a random thing is strategic. What feels chaotic is actually coordinated. What seems broken is actually becoming blessed.
Life Application
This week, stop wishing certain things in your life had never happened. Instead, choose to surrender those pieces to God and trust that He is weaving them into something purposeful. Let go of the need to control or understand every outcome, and acknowledge God in the middle of whatever you are facing right now.
Ask yourself these questions as you move through your week:

- Expect Him to show up in unexpected places.
- Know that He is always present in every shift, even the ones that feel the most disorienting.

Ask yourself these questions as you move through your week:
- Is there a painful or embarrassing piece of my story that I have been holding onto with regret, and can I begin to trust that God had a purpose in it?
- Where in my life am I leaning on my own understanding instead of trusting God with the outcome?
- What area of my life do I need to surrender control of so that God can truly work it out for my good?
- How can the pain or confusion I have experienced be used to help or encourage someone else who is going through something similar?
